Recent & Staple Beverage Loves

1. Tazo Organic Apple Red Tea - smells like pie! I have at least one mug of this a day

2. Cool Brew cold brew coffee - mix with 1/4 cup water, 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk and 1 packet of Stevia. LOVE New Orleans style chicory coffee

3. N.O. Brew - another delicious New Orleans style coffee. I mix it with 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk and 1 packet of Stevia - mmmmm

4. Harmless Harvest coconut water - the only coconut water that does not taste like feet

5. G.T.'s Organic Multi-Green Kombucha - looks weird, tastes delicious. The Gingerberry flavor is my second favorite.

6. I also like the chia seed kombuchas when I want something a little more filling

7. Nuun Tropical flavor drink tabs - I like to drink these with water when I'm working out

8. Suja Green Supreme (kale, apple & lemon) juice - sold at Whole Foods

9. Red Diamond Merlot - so cheap, so good

10. Skinny Girl Margarita with Simply Orange orange & mango juice - 6 oz margarita, 2 oz juice. Trust me, it's delicious.

After an unexplained four week hiatus, Nashville is finally back!

This is very good news for me because the last month has really been an emotional roller coaster.

Beat The Boredom Elliptical Workouts & Throwback 90's Music

So I've been a little MIA recently since work is getting busier, but I wanted to pop back in rull quick just so you don't forget me! I might be posting less frequently in the upcoming months as work ramps up, but we shall see. I still love blogging so maybe I'll want to post even more as a fun outlet. Who knows. I promise that if I have something extra special to share I won't leave you guys out of the loop. Sound good?

As I've mentioned before I go through phases with my workouts, especially with my cardio of choice. These days I generally rotate between running, cycling and the elliptical, but I've found myself elliptical-ing more than usual recently and wanted to share two quick workouts with y'all. The first is a 25 minute HIIT workout that is a slightly more difficult variation on this one. And the second has enough intervals to keep things interesting but never enters into that "OMG dying" level of HIIT. I did the first one yesterday and the second one this morning. The first burned about 300 calories and the second 350. But the first seemed much harder due to the intervals. That last 30 second interval nearly killed me.

On a related side note, this morning I decided to switch things up with my music and listen to the 90's Pandora station instead of my most recent workout playlist. Turned out to be the #bestdecisionever because I only skipped one song during my entire workout. That pretty much never happens when I use Pandora to work out. The only song I skipped was Tonic - "If You Could Only See". Not because it's a bad song per se; it just wasn't making me want to work out. I don't know if the songs I was getting were especially upbeat or if the nostalgia just distracted me from what I was doing, but I felt more motivated than usual with this throwback playlist.

After starting off strong with Ace of Base - "I Saw The Sign" I started snapping screen shots of the best tunes. Please tell me some of these take you back to elementary/middle school too.

"Shut the door baby, don't say a word."

And, for the grand finale, "Two Princes" by Spin Doctors. Kept my headphones in on the drive home for that one.

Virgin Diet: 21 Days Starts Now

As I mentioned back in this post, I started reading The Virgin Diet a month or so ago and have decided to finally bite the bullet and try out the three week elimination diet. The premise of the diet is simple. For three weeks, or 21 days, you eliminate seven of the most common allergenic foods from your diet. After the 21 days is up, you reintroduce these foods one by one. By noting your body's reactions to each of the foods you can determine which foods you have a sensitivity towards.

The seven foods/ingredients you eliminate are:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Corn
  • Artificial sweeteners and added sugars
The book provides convincing research that explains why each of these foods are common allergens. The science behind how these foods may negatively affect your digestive system and body is laid out in terms that are easy for someone who knows nothing about science to understand. Like a Bill Nye for adults! Remember that guy? The book also provides specific recipes and exercises to incorporate into the 21-day plan for those who want to follow it to the letter. Eliminating the seven foods is enough of a challenge for me so I will not be using the recipes (i.e. the meal replacement shakes) or the exercise regimen. I will be sticking to my normal exercise routine and maintaining a normal diet that is absent the seven food groups listed above. The only food group I am not going to be super strict about is the added sugars. While I will not be eating any processed foods containing sugars such as HFCS, I am okay with sugars such as coconut nectar, agave nectar, honey and maple syrup. Obviously not going to be consuming anything artificial. As a recovered Splenda addict (I had multiple packets a day in college) I will never touch that yellow crack powder again.

I'm really excited to try this for 21 days because I'm convinced it will make me feel like a magical energy wizard. However, I know it will be annoying at times. Part of the reason I'm putting this out there is so I can hold myself accountable during precisely those moments. I will obviously check back in after three weeks to let you guys know how it went. Hopefully the news will be earthshattering. Right...

I'll share some of my days of meals along the way to give you guys an idea what it's like to eliminate these foods. The only one I'm really freaking out about is eggs because I kinda eat them a lot. Wish me luck!

Girls: The Musical?

Have y'all been watching Girls? If not, you should start. Not only is the show hilarious (and at times painfully awkward); the music it features is incredible. Plus, they're only in the second season so you won't need long to catch on up. For example, I watched the entire first season over the course of a weekend. It's only five hours! But back to the music. Because it. is. goooood. I find myself googling lyrics at least twice or thrice throughout each episode because I hear some new (to me) song that I absolutely must download rightthissecond.

Craig's List Roundup Round Three (I think?)

Happy Hump Day, fellers! Per usual, I have been scrounging around Craig's List looking for furniture I probably definitely don't need. Finding heavily discounted furniture for no purpose is fun for me in and of itself (not being sarcastic); but it's even more fun when I can share those finds with you. Just because I don't have a need for any of this ish right now doesn't mean something might not work for one of you. Check it out and let me know what you think down below. These club chairs would need to be recovered, but the price is pretty great. And since there is not a lot of fabric surface area to cover, the cost of new upholstery wouldn't be unbearable.

Ignore the heinous fabric on this bench. For only $90, you can recover this in whatever you want and still have an affordable custom piece.

OMG that reminds me, I forgot to tell y'all that I got my leopard stools! I am OBSESSED. So obsessed that both italics and upper case shouting emphasis are required.

The other night I passed by them on my way to the kitchen and told them that I loved them. Not planned, not forced, it just came out. I couldn't help myself. They are that incredible. Here's a reminder of the inspiration pic I found on One King's Lane from this post.

Pretty freakin' close, amiright? If I remember correctly, the pair above was selling on OKL for $1,500 - discounted from the original price of $3,000. All in all, mine ended up costing $500 for the pair. Not too shabby when compared to the original. The stools themselves were $100, the fabric was $150, and the labor was $250. And the result is priceless! It's  my very own Master Card commercial.

I think a Craig's List success story is a pretty good way to end a post about Craig's List so with that I'm out!

Affordable Original Art Resource - Saatchi Online

Peruse my apartment for more than five minutes and you will recognize pretty quickly my love of oversized art. There is a massive mirror hanging over my sofa, a large-scale fabric-covered canvas above my bed and a pretty decently sized Prada Marfa canvas in my breakfast room. If there was a McDonald's for art I would always super size it. I love the grand scale of large art pieces, the bold statement that they make, and the simplicity of their selection. It’s so much easier to find one massive piece that you love versus creating, say a gallery wall. Not that I don’t love me a good gallery wall. It just doesn’t provide the same sense of instant gratification.

I shared with you a few great resources for oversized art in this post, but now I have a new favorite – Saatchi Online. Per their website, Saatchi Online is “a platform that allows emerging artists to showcase and sell their work and gives art lovers insider access to new talent from around the world.” Kind of like an Etsy for contemporary fine art. With the option to buy original art or printed reproductions, there is something to fit every budget. There are also various size options for each the reproductions, which you know I’m a fan of. Naturally I gravitate towards the largest size possible, but I recognize that bigger isn’t always better.

As you can see, I am really liking the colorful abstracts and unique portraits. How fun would it be to do a wall of portraits in various styles? I need more walls!

Sorry for the interior design overload the past few posts, but clearly I am having a case of art on the brain. For a minor subject matter detour, here's last week in fitness. I'm really trying to up my Define attendance and hope go to a minimum of 3 classes each week, with a goal of 4. So far, last week was a success. We'll see how I do going forward.

Monday - Ran 3 miles at 8:00 pace with four 1/4 mile walking breaks
Tuesday - 20 minute elliptical HIIT, Define Body
Wednesday - Incline walk, Define Body
Thursday - Ran 4 miles at 8:55 pace, Define Body
Friday - 30 minute HIIT workout, split between elliptical and bike
Saturday - Define Body
Sunday - Rest day
